Recruitment of Independent Member

Lincolnshire Police Authority has launched a campaign to recruit a new Independent Member.  It particularly wants to hear from younger people, women and people from minority groups.  The appointment is for a four year term, starting from 1st April 2010. The closing date for completed applications is Noon on 1st February 2010.

A basic annual allowance ranging from £8600 to £19600 per annum is payable, depending the level of responsibility.  A travel allowance, out of pocket expenses, contribution towards childcare or other dependant care costs are also payable where appropriate.  The successful applicant can expect to spend, on average, 12 hours a week on Authority work, for which training will be provided.  The main duties of the Police Authority are to:

  • Hold the police budget and decide how much council tax should be raised for policing
  • Appoint (and dismiss) the chief constable and senior police officers
  • Consult widely with local people to find out what they want from their local police
  • Set local policing priorities based on what local people say matters to them and targets for achievement
  • Monitor everything the police do and how well they perform against the targets set by the Authority
  • Publish a 3 year plan and an annual plan which tells local people what they can expect from their police service and reports back at the end of the year
  • Make sure local people get best value from their local police
  • Oversee complaints against the police and discipline senior officers

 The new Independent Member would be someone who:

  • is willing to seek out and listen to the views of local communities on policing issues
  • can challenge accepted views in a constructive way
  • has an understanding of the policing needs of the community and the pressures and challenges facing the police
  • can represent a wide range of people in the community and act on their behalf
  • has skills and knowledge in areas such as, performance management, ICT, finance and community/race relations.
