Children and Young People

Following the Victoria Climbié Inquiry the Government has made keeping children and young people safe a priority.

The Children Act 2004 provided the legal underpinning to these five key areas.  It places duties on Police Authorities and Chief Constables to ensure that their functions are discharged having regard to the need to safeguard and promote welfare of children.

As well as considering its own responsibility to children and young people, the Authority also require reassurance that the Force had appropriate and effective polices and procedures in place to meet the statutory responsibilities.

Monitoring and Overview Arrangements

The Community and Partnership Committee maintain an overview of ‘Children and Young people’ issues.  The Authority has appointed Fred Mann as the 'Portfolio Holder'.  Mr Mann reviews how well the Force and the Authority are doing in relation to children and young people.
