Performance Management Principles

Performance management is about monitoring and reviewing performance in order to make informed decisions about how to best manage resources to achieve objectives.

Following Performance Management principles allows police authorities and forces to continuously improve the service that is provided to local people.

Police authorities have a role in the overall performance management of force activity. Police authorities are required by statute to:

  • Secure the maintenance of an efficient and effective police service
  • Achieve continuous improvements in policing performance
  • Obtain the views of local people on policing matters.

The Authority has agreed that one of the strategic objectives will be to ‘set rigorous challenges for Force performance and hold the Chief Constable to account for their delivery.’

Our Performance Management Arrangements

We carry out our performance management duties through our committee process.  Certain aspects of force performance are monitored at Committees that are concerned with that particular area of business.  For example, the Human Resources Committee monitors Force business related to human resources matters.

The Finance and Performance Committee scrutinises the force's performance against the indicators and targets set out in the Policing Plan. It monitors performance in relation to other national initiatives such as The Analysis of Policing and Community Safety (APACS) framework.

The Finance and Performance Committee monitor performance on a quarterly basis and you can find out more information through the 'Performance Review' reports.

OnePlace

OnePlace was a national initiative set up for the public to find out how well their local public services were performing.  The assessments ended in June 2010.  The OnePlace website covers the annual assessments first released in December 2009, and will not be updated further.
