Independent Members of the Police Authority

Why become an Independent Member?

As a member of the Police Authority you can play an important role in helping to improve police performance and raising the standards of policing in your area. You can also help ensure that people from all the different local communities receive fair and non-discriminatory police services.

It is an important and challenging role which offers you the chance to have a crucial input into the strategic direction of the Police Force. Not only will you develop strong links with your communities, you will also gain a critical insight into policing both locally and nationally.

Independent members are expected to:

  • attend all Authority meetings and appropriate committees and working groups;
  • participate in public consultation on local policing issues, including evening meetings and public speaking;
  • keep abreast of developments in both local and national policing; and
  • represent the Authority in discussions with interested parties.

Independent members spend around 12 hours per week on Police Authority business, for which a basic annual allowance ranging from £8600 to £19600 per annum is payable depending on the level of responsibility.  A mileage allowance, out of pocket expenses, contribution towards childcare or other dependant care costs are also payable where appropriate.

We look for people with:

  • good communication skills and a willingness to seek out and listen to the views of all sections of the local community on policing issues;
  • relevant skills and knowledge (for example in management, business, finance, community or race-relations);
  • knowledge of diversity issues to support the Authority’s duty to promote equality and diversity in the police force; and
  • the ability to represent a broad range of local communities and challenge accepted views in a constructive way.
