Engagement and Communications Officer John Horton

Name: John Horton
Position: Engagement and Communications Officer.
My role is to ensure that the Police Authority engages (meets with and listens to) the communities of Lincolnshire, to find out what they want and expect from policing.
The Authority exists to represent those communities so we constantly want to hear from them. Sometimes we do this through structured consultations, like surveys and questionnaires and other times we will use other methods like voting systems or just speaking to and listening to groups.
Lincolnshire’s communities are extremely varied and it is also my job to make sure that everyone has the chance to be listened to, not just those who find it easy to tell us what they think.
I also spend a lot of my time explaining to people what the Police Authority is, and what it does. This means that I go into communities and talk to lots of people in various organisations such as schools and community centres.
Sometimes, the Authority needs to deal with the media. When this happens I write the press release and help the Authority members deal with any enquiries. I also publicise what the Authority does and try to get people involved by using different sorts of media such as this website.
About Me.
I have lived in Lincolnshire all my life and currently live just outside Lincoln city centre. Prior to working for the Police Authority, I worked for Lincolnshire Police, setting up and running the ‘community’ element of the training programme for student police officers.
Prior to that I have worked in several roles, including education, social services, training, community development and youth work.
